Sports Photographer
Nick Goodwin
Throughout my life, I’ve always chosen to do rather than watch. Even when my children were young, if they played a sport, I played alongside them. Sitting on the sidelines was never for me.
That mindset led me to try a wide variety of sports. While I never stuck to one, my experiences gave me a deep respect for those who commit to a single discipline and push themselves to reach the top of their game.
Sports Photographer – Capturing special moments
As a sports photographer, that respect guides me. Whether at a local park run or a top-level cycling event, when I focus my lens on an athlete’s face, I see more than the moment. I see the training, discipline, and sacrifice—the story of their journey written in their determination and grit. My role as a sports photographer isn’t just about capturing action shots—it’s about immortalizing the hard work and passion behind each athlete’s performance.
These days, with my children grown, I spend my time pursuing what I love. Most days, you’ll find me running or walking in the Wyre Forest. If it’s the weekend and I’m not photographing an event, I’ll likely be in Wales, hiking a mountain trail—a passion I’ve pursued for nearly a decade. In 2016, I completed the UK’s longest National Trail, the 630-mile South West Coast Path, with its brutal 115,000 feet of elevation. Two months of hiking. Two and a half months for my feet to recover.
Being a sports photographer allows me to combine my passion for action, endurance, and storytelling. Every event is a new opportunity to capture the defining moments that make sports so powerful. From the grit on a runner’s face during the final stretch of a race to the triumphant celebration after crossing the finish line, I focus on documenting the emotion and energy that athletes live for.
My love of endurance translates into my photography. A sports photographer must anticipate those key moments that bring a story to life. I seek to capture the moments that matter—the split second when years of pain, training, and mental battles give way to victory. When you see that photograph years later, I want you to think, “That was me. I did that.”
